Notes (W6P1)

  •  Recent stigma against promoting weight loss
It should be a persons choice, but losing weight should be inspired and encouraged/let's talk about the consequences of obesity in an uplifting way-this is why chronic illness is so rampant

Empower. A persons choice. What weight do they want to be? But inform of consequences of unhealthy weight. Why has talking about food become so socially unacceptable? Why is there a stigma around food?

Think about: TikTok Trend "Day in My Life of Eating": This rarely shows admirable habits/not everyones diet should look the same

Normal weight=minority. By 2050, 30% of people will have diabetes. Every year, the prevalence of diabetes increases by 2 to 3%. Big part of the problem is chronic undernourishment.

  • Protein Industry/Protein Supplement Industry: eat more protein than we need. All plants have amino acids, which is converted to protein. All Whole Foods have proteins? Protein deficiency is very scarce. This is a marketing ploy.
  • Literature of Nutrition: only way we have ever enhanced longevity in trials is in dietary restriction without malnutrition, particularly restriction of "essential amino acids". So, less protein might extend life. Nutrition professionals say the next big thing mat be limiting protein.
Common Mistake:
Vegans are not coming to nutritionists and doctors with the same health problems as omnivores. Why? Because of the "anything you can eat, I can eat vegan" mindset. Do not eat the artificial vegan-marketed foods.
Oxidative Hierarchy (?)-want to do further research here. It was very briefly mentioned.

How to Start:
Stick to Whole Foods and eat as much as you want. If you have trouble losing the last few pounds, then start laying off the amount you are snacking.

Problems With the Keto Diet:
Yes, assists in weight loss. But it is not healthy. It is not healthy to eat all meat or mostly meat. You can lose weight with crack but we do not do that.
Carbs, protein, and fat do not matter.
  • "High Carb Diets and Low Carb Diets Increase Mortality" was an article published. Consumers cannot interpret this in a meaningful way. Lifestyle information is not marketed for the average American.
  • Diets should not focus on carbs, protein, and fat. That diet will never work or be long-lasting. A good diet is vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices.

Food Pyramid
Traditional Food Pyramid.
Observations:
Bread, cereal, and potatoes before fruits and veggies?

Current Model for Children:
Current My Plate seen in schools.

Observations:
Additional protein on top of vegetables.
The grains that are typically offered may not be those that are most beneficial to the body. The way schools interpret this could be questionable and unreliable.

Are we just putting this in the lunch line and expecting kids to understand and follow?
